Finally finished! Praise God! I needed His grace and mercy to complete this one. It’s not like any I’ve done before in that I did not work from life or one or two photos, but from ideas my uncle had and a lot of photos pieced together. He wanted an old time fall scene of a man finishing up cutting wood at the end of the day. It was a challenge putting it all together, trying to get everything the right scale and placed in a nice composition. I spent more time on the drawing than I did the painting process. I tried to give it a late afternoon feel with a yellow and red underpainting on most of the paper. I was afraid the sky would turn green after I painted the blue over top of the yellow, but it worked out fine. I had not painted horses, a wagon or corn shocks before. I worked hard to get the placement of the grass and colors and texture to look right.

Prints of this painting were made and given as gifts to the Skybox holders on Opening Day. It was a challenge painting all the spectators and getting Cylo’s fur to look right. Thank God for His grace in completing this painting. Commisions are always tough for me to work on. I put a lot of pressure on myself, but the Lord was with me, working and providing His grace and mercy.

Kennedy Space Center November 1, 2010
Thursday November 25, 2010

Greg and I took a vacation to Florida hoping to see the space shuttle launch and spend some time on the beach. We had a wonderful time even though the shuttle didn’t launch. :) We saw the Cocoa Beach airshow, the Kennedy Space Center and the shuttle on the launch pad, and some manatees, dolphins, alligators and all sorts of wading birds …besides relaxing on the beach.
I went back to the Kennedy Space Center a second day without Greg hoping to paint. I scoped out a shady spot with a nice view of the space shuttle. Then I went to hear astronaut Jim Reilly speak. He said he would be available later for autographs. I was thinking about what I could get him to sign as I was sitting there painting the space shuttle… my painting! So I went to the gift shop early and was the first one in line for autographs…I still waited an hour! It was a long day but I was happy for the opportunity and inspiration. I had been wanting to visit the space center since 6th grade when I read all about the Apollo program.
