Commission for Harper Tree Service

Finally finished! Praise God! I needed His grace and mercy to complete this one. It’s not like any I’ve done before in that I did not work from life or one or two photos, but from ideas my uncle had and a lot of photos pieced together. He wanted an old time fall scene of a man finishing up cutting wood at the end of the day. It was a challenge putting it all together, trying to get everything the right scale and placed in a nice composition. I spent more time on the drawing than I did the painting process. I tried to give it a late afternoon feel with a yellow and red underpainting on most of the paper. I was afraid the sky would turn green after I painted the blue over top of the yellow, but it worked out fine. I had not painted horses, a wagon or corn shocks before. I worked hard to get the placement of the grass and colors and texture to look right.
